Ed Stern, MSN PMHNP

Hello, I'm Ed.

I am a recent Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) graduate (May 2021), experienced nurse, medical podcast creator, LGBTQ+ public radio show host, and so much more.

Thanks for taking the time to learn about me.

Clinical Experience

Ed has a distinguished medical career that started in the early 80s starting with EMS, as an educator and nurse. As a nurse, my clinical experience was psychiatry, emergency medicine, and trauma.

My psychiatry experience includes inpatient and outpatient care, PHP, and IOP treatment programs. My patients have been across the age spectrum, but I specialized in adolescents (14+) and young adults.

I have lived and professional experience working with the unique psychiatric needs of the LGBTQ+ community and civil servants (fire, EMS, and law enforcement).

My clinical experience in school includes more than 750 hours, in the following areas:

  • Pediatric and adolescent medication management
  • Adult medication management
  • Individual and group therapy
  • LGBTQ+ affirming care
  • Functional medicine in psychiatry
  • Trauma-informed care

Completed Clinical Rotations

Over the past year, I have completed more than 750 clinical hours (150% of the ANCC certification criteria).

I've worked with diverse patients including geriatric, pediatric. ASD, LGBTQ+. I have seen acute and chronic patients, from all socioeconomic settings.

#1. Individual Therapy

More than 160 hours

#2. Group/Family Therapy

Employment Goals

I am confident that my professional experience with trauma care, gender identity, sexual identity, neurodivergence, and co-occurring diagnoses will be valuable to my future.

I have worked with diverse groups such as low-income, uniformed personnel (emergency responders), the LGBTQIA+ community, and the BIPOC community.  I hope to join a practice that aligns with my clinical background, that affirms the LGBTQIA+ community, and provides exceptional outpatient psychiatric care.

Ed's Background in a Nutshell

PMHNP Graduate

Completed my MSN as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Walden University. One of the key reasons I chose Walden because of its focus on therapeutic care along with medication management.

After years as a Paramedic, an educator and then a technology marketing executive I returned to healthcare in 2001 to become an RN. As a nurse, I have worked in a variety of clinical settings including; emergency medicine, ambulatory care, leadership and of course behavioral health.

EMT/Paramedic

Even before I was out of high school I started my medical profession. I was an EMT in high school, and my first degree is as a Paramedic, I worked in EMS for 12 years.

Educator

CEU Podcaster

The creator and host of PsychNP Cast, designed specifically for the PMHNP community. Also previously I developed and hosted a CEU Podcast for EMS professionals.

Radio Show Co-Host

Most nurses don't spend a lot of time hosting a radio show, but I was given an opportunity to be a volunteer co-host on a public radio program. I now co-host a show on LGBTQ+ health and wellness topics and air live about once a month for a full hour. I bring guest experts in and we talk about a variety of mental and physical health topics relevant to the LGBTQ+ community

Nursing and EMS Adjunct

More than 14 years as a college adjunct educator. Topics taught were EMS and Nursing.

Additional Background

Foster Parent

For seven years I fostered a number of teenagers through Fairfax County Virginia. I was able to meet their personal needs and assist them with various behavioral problems common in youth today.

Innovator

I had the pleasure of being at the forefront of the "dot com" boom in the '90s. I helped companies profit through the use of technology, as well as building the internet strategy for one of the largest nonprofit organizations.

Photographer

I started taking pictures when I was 2 and I'm still at it. I have been a newspaper stringer, a fire scene photographer and a landscape and flower photographer.

Horseback Rider

My biological father rode horses professionally. He had me on horses around the same time I was able to waddle. It stuck and today I get an amazing sense of joy and comfort around these amazing animals.
